In 1835, Yukichi Fukuzawa was born in the Nakatsu domain's storehouse in Osaka. At the age of one year and six months, he returned to the domain after the death of his father and spent his childhood and adolescence (until the age of 19) in this house until he went to Nagasaki to study.
The house has been preserved in its original state, including the storehouse which Yukichi remodeled himself and where he studied hard.
The adjacent Memorial Hall was renovated in 2011. In addition to the first edition of "Gakumon no Susume" (An Encouragement of Learning), books, letters, and photographs, many materials related to Yukichi Fukuzawa, such as the first issue of the 10,000 yen note, are on display.
In addition, the Shirasagi Inari Shrine on the premises is visited by many people, including students preparing for entrance exams, to pray for academic success.
