The school was founded in 1817 by Hirose Tansou, one of the three wise men of Bungo and a Confucian scholar and educator of the Edo period.
The name "Hamgyi" means “Minayoshi” and it is a private school named after the fact that it accepts not only samurai but also people of any status, age, and educational background in Hita, a natural territory. The school is known as the largest private school in modern Japan, where many great figures from the Edo to Meiji periods, such as “Omura Masujiro” and “Kiyoura Keigo” left.
The school is now open to the public free of charge and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Hita City.
In addition, the adjacent Hamgyuen Education and Research Center exhibits and displays materials related to Hamgyuen, Hirose Tansou and his students.
