The Inaba Family Shimoyashiki was built in 1902 as a residence for the Inaba family, the former lords of the Usuki domain, who moved to Tokyo after the establishment of the domain.
The building is registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan because of its use of high quality materials such as Japanese cedar and Japanese cypress, and its prestigious features such as the entrance with a ceremonial podium and the back room with a shoin-style room.
In addition, the adjoining former Hirai Family Residence is a senior samurai residence that still retains the architectural style of the late Edo period. It is designated as a Tangible Cultural Property by the prefecture for its distinctive and emotional appearance.
