The museum is based on the concept of "a museum of encounters and the five senses".
The exterior, which evokes the image of traditional bamboo craftsmanship, and the glass-walled, open-plan building were designed by world-renowned architect Shigeru Ban.
The museum exhibits works unique to Oita, such as those by Japanese painting masters Fukuda Heihachiro and Takayama Tatsuo, and Tanomura Takeda, known for his Bungo Nanga paintings.
