Art Plaza was designed by Arata Isozaki, an international architect from Oita City, and was completed in 1966 as the Oita Prefectural Library. Since then, it has been familiar to many residents of the prefecture.
With the relocation of the prefectural library to a new building in 1996, the prefecture transferred the land and building to Oita City, which now uses it as an "art plaza" for citizens to exchange cultural information.
The Art Plaza is a complex facility for arts and culture, with a citizens' gallery and a place for creative art activities on the first and second floors, and is used for active cultural activities by its users.
On the third floor, models and materials of Isozaki's architectural works from all over the world are permanently displayed, and his achievements are open to the public.
