The Magaibutsu carved in the precincts of Fukouji Temple is 11.4 meters high, and together with the Kumano Magaibutsu on the Kunisaki Peninsula, it is the largest Magaibutsu in Oita Prefecture and one of the largest in Japan.
The statue of Fudo Myoo is at the center, with the statues of Kyojira Doji and Seikagakko Doji on either side, and the statues of Tamonten and Bensaiten on the right hand side.
Bensaiten The statue is carved on the fourth pyroclastic flow of Aso volcano about 90,000 years ago, while this one is carved on the third pyroclastic flow about 120,000 years ago.
The temple is also known as "Hydrangea Temple", and as the name implies, many hydrangeas bloom in the temple grounds around mid-June every year.
