Niouza, located in the lap of Usuki Castle, is a tuff hill formed by the solidification of volcanic ash from Mount Aso, and roads were cut through the rocks here and there. Everywhere in the narrow alleyways, there are still traces of the castle town's unique atmosphere. High stone walls, massive tiled roofs, white-walled buildings and many temples continue for a long time along the slope.
The area in front of the old Shinkoji Temple is called "Kiridoshi", and is one of the most representative views of Usuki. The wet stone pavement is especially atmospheric after it rains.
In November 1993, this area was selected as one of the 100 best urban landscapes in Japan.
