It is the remains of a military fortress that took four years to build in 1931 and played an important role as a defensive fortress in the Bungo Suido area.
In January 1942, a test firing of the 30cm cannon mounted on the cruiser Ibuki was conducted, and the last shot exploded in the mouth of the cannon, resulting in a major disaster with many casualties.
The monument is located at the entrance of the facility, and the soldiers who survived collected their belongings and buried them here.
Today, the facility is well maintained and has been revived as a tourist attraction, with a lean-to lift next to the 170 or so granite stairs leading up to the turret.
It was also featured in a commercial for Oita Mugi Shochu Nikaido.
